Kayse Melone - From Christian to Atheist: Books That Got Me Here
24:15 A lot more atheists are men than women. I also think that it's because of the atheist community. It's still a boy’s club. It just is.
The “spiritual not religious” community feels a lot more welcoming and open for women. [Women] are more interested in – I truly stand by this – they are more interested in why things matter, in solving real-world problems, in being meaning-driven and purpose-driven and community-driven, than just so stuck on being right…
I don't care how much we debunk the Bible, and call-out how the Christian God as a mythology, or call it a fairy tale. I don't care about any of that, if we're not actually then going out and improving the material conditions of people on this planet, Christians included…
That's one of the reasons I call myself a “spiritual atheist.” Because I don't want to leave the spiritual girlies out of my circle. They are important to me.
28:09 Christian Zionism is the most dangerous, and horrific, and terrible result of Evangelical Christianity's stronghold on politics, here in the United States.
I'm trying to talk about that the most. Because it was something that I didn't realize was even an issue when I was raised in the Evangelical Christian church…
[I think] this is the biggest issue that comes from deconstructing from Evangelical Christianity. It is so dangerous, it is so sinister, it is so messed up.
I will say this: I am working on consolidating a lot of resources about Christian Zionism. The more I learn about it, the more absolutely enraging it is.
…A lot of people in the in the atheist world don't talk about [this] because they get excited about being correct and about being rational. They get stuck in these cycles of trying to prove Christians wrong without recognizing that the actual problem is not about white people in the United States feeling better about being correct about reality.
The actual problem that's manifesting from Evangelical Christian church is on the other side of the world. Because Christian Zionists are being used and being mobilized to give their votes, to give their money, to these political leaders. Who are buddies with the religious leaders. Who are convincing the Christian congregation to believe all of this. So that the political leaders can then go over to the Middle East (who probably don't even believe in Christian theology at all) but are using, again, the Christian congregation to get votes and money. So that they can go over there, decimate an entire people, and contribute so much violence into this world, through the state of Israel. Through the unwavering support of Israel escalating the violence in the Middle East, for their own gain. To keep that area of the world destabilized so that they can be greedy assholes about all of the resources that are available there.
Meanwhile, over here in the United States, every time the violence has escalated the Evangelical Christians I grew up with were excited, because it meant that we were that much closer to the end times.
So Christian Zionism is insane. It is absolutely sinister. It is the worst result of Evangelical Christianity in the United States and I don't think enough atheists talk about it.
